TIFF 2018: The Wedding Guest

09/15/2018

 ★★

For a thriller, The Wedding Guest sure doesn't have very much going on. Its characters lack motivation, its plot points are convoluted and don't always add up, and worst of all, it is simply boring. Dev Patel is about the only redeeming quality in this hot mess, and even he isn't enough to save this film. The beginning of the film showed some potential, but it eventually just went downhill in terms of both coherence and enjoyability. There was no reason to care about any of the film's characters or explanation as to why they were doing what they were doing half of the time. There were also virtually no stakes in the fact that despite the leads always being "on the run," there was never really anybody chasing after them - only vague news reports that never really amount to anything. This was definitely not Patel's stronger film coming out of TIFF - hopefully he has much more ground to work with in Hotel Mumbai.
