TIFF 2018: Roma

09/14/2018

 ★★★★½

Believe the rumours - Alfonso Cuarón's Roma is just about as great as everyone says is. This immersive film places you right in the heart of Mexico City, following the life of a young maid and housekeeper named Cleo (a role performed with extraordinary authenticity by Yalitza Aparicio). Her relationship with the family she works for and lives with is both an interesting and heartening one to witness unfolding. Its black-and-white stylization perfectly suits the film's tone and reminds us that this is a story of a previous era, giving it a feeling of nostalgia as if looking at an old photograph; as if this story is but a memory of the past. It may have been said several times already, but it holds true nonetheless: see this on the big screen if you can - it'll be well worth it.
