REVIEW: Invasion of Privacy

★★★★½

After much anticipation, Cardi B's long-awaited debut has finally arrived - and it doesn't disappoint. It rewards everyone with high hopes by surpassing the best of them, and it proves all the naysayers wrong. With a perfect blend of her signature bluntness and unfiltered vulnerability that seep through her lyrics, Cardi is undeniably emerging as one of rap's major players.

The album is packed with 13 tracks, many of which possess the same potential single power as the previously released "Bodak Yellow" and "Bartier Cardi" (which, of course, made the final cut). With a punching combination of fresh beats, a distinct flow, and resonant lyrics, Invasion of Privacy doesn't have a weak spot - it remains consistently strong throughout its duration.

"Drip" and "She Bad" bring the same celebrated confidence present in her past tracks, while more emotionally poignant tracks like "Be Careful" and "Ring" bring a new depth to Cardi's music that finally have the opportunity to be explored on a full-length feature. She blends the elements together on tracks like "Best Life," a collaboration with Chance the Rapper, where she raps, "'Cardi B is so problematic' is the hashtag/I can't believe they wanna see me lose that bad."

She visits her Latin roots by sampling the 1967 hit "I Like It Like That" on her track with Bad Bunny and J Balvin titled "I Like It." Besides embracing her heritage, she also acknowledges past demons from a cheating ex in "Thru Your Phone," the album's title garnering its significance: "I don't wanna hear 'bout invasion of privacy/I had a feeling, it turns out you lied to me."

The album closes with all-empowering "I Do" shared with SZA, where she shouts her self-love from the rooftop and refuses to apologize for it. And perhaps that's why Cardi's music has been so monumental - she is the voice that women have been needing to hear in hip-hop.

Invasion of Privacy is a stunning debut and as the title itself suggests, it's a multi-layered confessional that invites us into Cardi B's world - and with songs this good, it's one you'll never want to leave.
