TIFF 2018: Vox Lux

09/07/2018

 ★★★★½

Brady Corbet's glittering arthouse drama about a young pop star's rise to fame is not quite what you'd expect it to be: it is a dark take on the idea of spectacle in society and the connection between celebrity and violence both as something to be commodified. The film is boundary-pushing and will likely shock and disturb many, but the statement it makes is a powerful one. Supplemented by stunning visuals and brilliant performances from its cast, Vox Lux is set to be one of the most talked-about (and potentially controversial) films of the year.

The film is broken up into acts that mark the different stages in Celeste's (Natalie Portman; Raffey Cassidy) rise to fame. A fairly shocking event marks the opening of the film and sets the tone for what is to come - the story possesses extremely dark overtones for its remainder. But this early event is necessary for understanding Celeste's development throughout the film. Natalie Portman, Raffey Cassidy, and Jude Law all give stellar performances that give this Vox Lux definite potential for the awards circuit, and its attention visual style and flare makes it bound to be a success among indie film lovers.
